Abstract
Interactional aerodynamics is present in many aerospace applications and is broadly defined as the fluid-dynamic interactions between lifting/non-lifting aircraft components as well as interactions between time-varying flows generated by bluff-body wakes and atmospheric flows with aircraft and e.g. wind turbines. The presenter is an expert in computational & experimental rotary wing aerodynamics with emphasis in the areas of rotorcraft aeromechanics and wind energy. The seminar shows examples of current activities in interactional aerodynamics research including wind farm wake modeling, icing on wind turbines, helicopter rotor hub flows, aircraft drag decomposition, and the interaction of ship airwakes with the atmospheric boundary layer and subsequent coupling to rotorcraft flight dynamics. The seminar also shows some of the scientific benefits associated with simultaneous computational & experimental research campaigns.

About the Speaker
Dr. Sven Schmitz joined the faculty of Aerospace Engineering at Penn State University in 2010. He received a diploma degree in Aerospace Engineering from RWTH Aachen (Germany) in 2002 and a Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering from the University of California Davis in 2006. Dr. Schmitz spent four years as a post-doctoral researcher and project scientist at Davis before coming to Penn State.

Hosted by Dr. Jim Gregory, Director of the Aerospace Research Center and Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
